A Little Data on the Non-Profit Job Market
What’s the proper historical comparison for the current economic downturn? Perhaps we can draw lessons from the most recent recession, earlier this decade.
What Can 2001 Tell Us about Non-Profit Jobs in 2009?
Here are a few observations:
- The data show a trend of changes in headcount (i.e., the number of jobs) — both up and down — lagging behind revenue changes by about two years.
- On a percentage basis, overall declines in revenue (2000-2002) and headcount (2002-2004) were roughly equal (2%). Meanwhile, the overall recovery in revenue (25%; 2002-2004) was more than twice that of headcount (9%; 2004-2006).
If you’re looking to break into the non-profit community — or if you currently reside therein — this data could be food for thought.
