Can economics alone explain the modern world?
As you speak with friends about policy and politics, you may notice they return to a few basic ideas. “Profit is evil,” some say. Or, “businesses exist to rip off the little guy.”
Words matter, but so do the cultural premises that inform our ideas. How society views and regards entrepreneurs, businesspeople, and merchants is crucial to understanding where we are today and how common views will shape the future.
So says UIC Distinguished Professor of Economics, History, English, and Communication Deirdre McCloskey. She argues that although markets and trade are important parts of the story of human prosperity, shifting opinions on entrepreneurship and business are the real enablers of modern innovation and economic growth.
AFF-Chicago will host Professor McCloskey on October 19th for an illuminating talk and a book-signing of her most recent book: Bourgeois Dignity.
