Around 35 young professionals attended the Dallas Chapter of America’s Future Foundation’s event, How to Fix Social Security on April 11. Dr. W. Michael Cox, Director of the O’Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom at Southern Methodist University and former Chief Economist of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, showed attendees how privatizing social security could fix America’s broken system. Dr. Cox explained how Chile had privatized their retirement system, which resulted in huge gains for worker’s retirement income. The 20-minute talk was followed by a lively Q&A session. Dr. Cox offered suggestions to young professionals, and urged them to write their representatives and ask them to reform America’s Social Security system. This event was sponsored by The Atlas Network and free copies of After the Welfare State (published by The Atlas Network and Students for Liberty) were distributed.

Around 40 young professionals gathered at The Dram on Tuesday, March 5th to hear Amity Shlaes discuss her new book, Coolidge. Shlaes gave a thoughtful and humorous depiction of Calvin Coolidge, a president often overlooked. But Shlaes described him as a president who despised taxes and spending and who wasn’t afraid to say no. Although his frugality led him to be unpopular in Washington, he was able to grow the economy through significant income tax cuts. Shlaes told that crowd that the liberty movement needed another presidential role model to look to other than Ronald Reagan, and touted that Coolidge is most certainly the one.
The discussion was followed by a question and answer session and a networking happy hour. Guests left excited to purchase and read Coolidge.
