Elections for Sale? Campaign Finance after Citizens United

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

campaignfinanceimage1 A panel discussion on the Supreme Court’s bombshell ruling on free speech, corporations, and campaign contributions

With Obamacare passed, the focus of many on the Right has turned towards the November 2010 elections. In the midst of the health care battle however, a seismic Supreme Court ruling in the case of Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission overturned decades of federal campaign finance regulations. As a result of the ruling, corporations are no longer prohibited from political advertising during elections.

Is this a win for freedom of speech under the First Amendment? Or an opportunity for “big business” to buy elections? How will this affect the November elections?

Join AFF Nashville on Tuesday, May 4 to hear a distinguished panel weigh in on the subject:

  • David Hudson: First Amendment Scholar, First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University
  • Dr. Nathan Griffith: Associate Professor, Belmont University (Specialization in Constitutional Law)
  • Justin Owen, J.D.: Director of Policy, Tennessee Center for Policy Research

We will be meeting in the Belle Meade Room at the Hampton Inn in Green Hills (2324 Crestmoor Road). Reception begins at 6:30 pm. Panel discussion from 7:30-8:30 pm.

Beer/wine & hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

Further, they have assured us special treatment proportional to our attendance, so everyone bring friends and let us test the limits of this economy of scale.

No RSVP is necessary, but feel free to email chip@americasfuture.org if you have any questions at all.
