Correlation and causality

By: Sonny Bunch

What’s the saying? “Correlation does not imply causality”? Keep that in mind when reading nonsense like this:

Women have made less progress toward gender equality in the Middle East than in any other region. Many observers claim this is due to the region’s Islamic traditions. I suggest that oil, not Islam, is at fault; and that oil production also explains why women lag behind in many other countries.

Yup. An inanimate object in the ground is more likely to cause the systematic degradation of women than a religion dedicated to the notion that women are inferior to men. That reminds me: I have a rock on my desk at work. It keeps tigers away. I can’t tell you how it works, but you don’t see any tigers, now do you?*

*I tried to find the video clip of Lisa explaining to Homer the difference between correlation and causality, but I couldn’t find it. Instead, I found about twenty Dragonball Z mashups. Can anyone explain to me the purpose of a Dragonball Z mashup? And perhaps suggest somewhere to find clips of Simpsons episodes? I feel like most anything in life can be explained by a South Park clip or a Simpsons clip more succinctly than I can explain it.
