Dogfish Head’s Raison D’Etre

By: Sonny Bunch

I’m not much of a “fancy beer” drinker. I like Miller Lite because I can drink it all night and maintain the same, nice low-level buzz. I like Pabst because it’s cheap. Sam Adams Light is about as fancy as I tend to get.

But let me tell you, I have found a new favorite: Dogfish Head’s Raison D’Etre is like nectar sent from the gods to sate your thirst. I picked up a bottle at Total Wine as part of a sampler pack my boy Zeb chose for me, and it was the highlight. Run, do not walk, out on the town to find one.

I’m not a food writer so I won’t regale you with fancy words to describe the fancy beer. But this is the label’s description: “A deep mahogany ale brewed with Belgian beet sugars, green raisins, & a sense of purpose.” I don’t really understand why all those flavors come together, but they do. If you’re in the DC area, check it out at The Brickskeller or try and find a Total Wine. Couldn’t tell you where in DC one of those might be.
