I know everyone is bummed about this law, but it really won't be the end of the world. Personally, I believe everyone should be able to make their own choice. However, I personally benefit and your bar does too. I quit smoking for my son and haven't been to any bars in two years because I couldn't justify coming home smelling like smoke. One month ago, for the first time in two years I was able to go out and drink and play at a bar and have been doing so at least once a week since then in establishments I have missed like Angelos, BOG, Clinton Street Pub... I've been able to go play pinball at Ground Control and drink in a place besides a restaurant. Its been awesome for me and my personal preference. And hopefully it gives some bar owners hope that they won't lose a bunch of money and are giving people on the opposite end of the spectrum a really great thing. And for this they are receiving income from people who would have never gone there and spent money.
Smokers don't have to worry about going home and smelling like fresh air, but non-smokers have to worry about smelling like smoke.

I’m someone who has travelled from London three times to visit the Horse Brass and all the good friends I have made through the twining with my local. the Princess of Wales. What the lawmakers on both sides of the ditch ignore is that when we are in a pub we are a guest in someone’s home. So it should be up to them whether people are allowed to smoke or not.
I’m a non-smoker. The only time I’ve smoked in a pub was as a protest on the last day it was legal in England – a rather fine Cuban cigar. (Are these still banned in the Land of the Free?)
Don’t be alarmed by Dudley’s comment on the PoW – still good beer, food and company.

"Land of the Free..."

My ass.

I have no clue why I even served in the USMC for as long as I did. All I did was serve to empower those who wish to turn the USA into an Orwellian nightmare.

Smoking in a bar while enjoying the esprit de corps of real MEN and escaping the pressures and restrictions of modern - domesticated life was one of our last meaningful pleasures.

Oh well... It's all slipping away and nobody cares.

Things are always in a state of change; it's just unfortunate that in the case of the smoking v non-smoking debate, things are presently changing for the worse. I am convinced that the powers that have forced this act into law will not stop here. Smoking IS LEGAL FOR ADULTS, so this law doesn't make sense. What's next? Ban on fatty foods? Oh, yeah - they're already doing that. Liquor prohibition? It's happened before... I am not even a smoker, but the implications are a little frightening.

I live in South London where the smoking ban has been in force for eighteen months now. It was with great pleasure that I was able to stand in the Horsebrass last July and drink a pint and smoke a fag indoors and all at once. It made me feel quite nostalgic. Shame the nanny state has caught up even with you lot!
by the way, the Princess of Wales is a crap boozer, much better (and in the same locale) is the Killkeeny Tavern!

what comes to mind when i think of Don younger...The ultimate publican, dear friend, mentor, promoter of all things good about the bar industry, the man who helped put portland on the world beer map...I have so many fond memories of the Horse brass i don't know where to begin. Now that i live in Florida i realize how much i miss the honesty of the horse brass and the man who owns it. We all have choices of where we spend our time and money.I have always been a non smoker and relished every minute i have spent in that "smokey" wonderful pub.I only hope that Don stands strong and continues to sit at the end of that beautiful bar and hold court like he has done for the last 32 years. The good people of Portland and beyond will always congregate in the places that truly mean something in their heart. the horse brass is that place and Don Younger is that man we all go to see.Love ya brother...scott
