Join AFF Austin for our first event of 2018, “The Fourth Amendment in the Digital Age: What We Can Learn from Ross Ulbricht’s Latest Appeal.”
We’re excited to welcome Lyn Ulbricht, of Free Ross, and Chance Weldon, attorney with the Center for the American Future, to discuss Ross Ulbricht’s new petition to have his case taken up by the Supreme Court. Ross is currently serving a life sentence without parole for crimes connected to his operating the Silk Road.
Ross’s petition argues that his Fourth and Sixth Amendment rights were violated during the investigation and sentencing; that government agents violated Ulbricht’s Fourth Amendment right by collecting his internet traffic information without a warrant or probable cause. Lyn will guide us through Ross’s case, newest developments, and the precedent it sets. Chance will discuss what we can expect if the case is taken up by the Supreme Court and look at a similar case that the Supreme Court is already considering,Carpenter v. United States, which will determine whether police need a warrant to obtain cell phone records that reveal a person’s location and movements.
Join us on the East Side for this event on Monday, February 26th at 7PM. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
Check out freeross.org for more info on the topic to get excited. Make sure to help us spread the word and invite your friends to our 2018 kickoff event!
