Grand Rapids Chapter Event: Is There a Future For Education Competition?

April 20, 2017 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Brewery Vivant

925 Cherry Street Southeast, Grand Rapids,

AF invites you to network with young professionals and learn about the current landscape for charter schools from guest speaker Lewis Butler. This is a great opportunity to meet other professionals from across western Michigan. We will have food and your first drink is on us!

In December 2011 Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill lifting the cap on the number of charter schools in Michigan. Advocates of school choice predicted better outcomes for students through innovation and competition for students. Skeptics predicted an unregulated free-for-all. Five years have passed and neither side can clearly claim victory.

Does competition not work in education? Is the education landscape unregulated? Where does this leave advocates and skeptics of school choice going forward?

Lewis Butler has served on two charter school boards in Detroit, which opened as a result of the lifting of the cap on the number of charter schools. He will share his views on the charter school movement and what implications this has for advocates of school choice.
