Problem: Overcriminalization is happening at an alarming rate in our country – America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Thanks to mandatory sentencing, too many non-violent offenders have been sent directly to prison for too long – and communities of color are being hurt the most. There are way too many laws, and many – namely, drug laws – are often unrealistically harsh. Judges are being forced to administer punishments that don’t make sense for non-violent crimes. No one should spend decades in prison for a non-violent marijuana drug offense.

Solution: We must work to reassess all of our laws – what we consider criminal must be re-evaluated. And we must end federal mandatory sentencing for non-violent offenses. Judges must be empowered to design punishments that fit the scope of the crime and make the most sense for communities – let’s get the federal government out of the way. We’re about restorative justice: alternative, rehabilitative sentences should be considered in sentencing.
