The Pension Integrity Project at Reason Foundation offers pro-bono consulting to public officials and other stakeholders to help them design and implement pension reforms that improve plan solvency and promote retirement security. The team's work includes customized analysis of pension solvency and reform policy design, independent actuarial modeling of reform scenarios, assistance with stakeholder outreach, engagement and relationship management, and more.

About the Opening

This Policy Analyst will work with the Pension Integrity Project team to translate complex actuarial analysis content into comprehendible materials for policymakers, labor leaders, and any other stakeholders for a public sector pension plan. The role involves working with team members producing quantitative analysis as well as providing technical assistance to policymakers and their staff, plan administrators, labor leaders, plan participants, and other direct stakeholders by effectively communicating to them the challenges that pension plans face and how proposed changes would influence projected solvency.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the quantitative analysts on the project team to develop actuarial forecasts, stress tests, or sensitivity analysis from proposed plan design or plan method changes.
  • Write ‘plain English’ reports and create presentations that report the actuarial analysis results for elected officials and stakeholders interested in pension plan solvency
  • Work with elected officials and interested stakeholders, alongside other project team members, in a support capacity for those seeking to implement meaningful changes that will improve solvency and reduce risks
  • Author research papers, commentaries, or other written products related to public sector pension finance and pension reform topics
  • Regular travel to state capitol cities will be required

Qualifications / Competencies

A strongly qualified candidate will have:

  • 5+ years experience working in the non-profit research sector or private sector in an policy capacity that required engaging policymakers
  • Working knowledge of public sector pensions, pension reform, and pension finance (preferred but not required)
  • Master’s degree in public policy, politics, economics, or equivalent field is preferred; candidates with only a bachelor’s degree but with strong relevant experience will be considered
  • Clear and concise writing skills
  • Proven relationship building skills

Other Details

  • Negotiable; could be work from home, or work from Reason’s offices in Washington D.C. or Los Angeles
  • Project team members are currently located in Arizona, California, Colorado, D.C. and New York
  • Salary will be based on level experience
