AF Austin: Liberty and Craft Beer

By: Kathryn Shelton

On Tuesday, November 19th, the Austin chapter of America’s Future Foundation hosted “Liberty and Libations”, a panel discussion and mixer about the issues facing the craft brewery and craft distillery industries in Texas. The panel included Chip McElroy, owner of Live Oak Brewing Company, and Mark Shilling, owner of Revolution Spirits; it was moderated by Matt Miller, executive director of the Texas Chapter of the Institute for Justice.

Together, the panelists and moderator painted a picture of the regulatory burdens faced by their respective businesses as well as the legislative victory achieved earlier this year. Importantly, it became clear to attendees that deeply-rooted economic protectionism—by way of government picking winners and losers in the marketplace—has played no small part in preventing these entrepreneurs from climbing the economic ladder, and exercising their economic liberty.
