Roger Custer Featured in Phillips Foundation “Freedom Report”

By: AF Editors

AF Executive Director Roger Custer is the featured alumnus in the new “Freedom Report” from the Phillips Foundation.

The Phillips Foundation and its founder, Thomas L. Phillips, has long been a friend of America’s Future. We often collaborate on journalism initiatives with the young writers who are awarded the Novak Journalism Fellowship. Several have written or edited Doublethink over the years including Tim Carney, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Sonny Bunch, Michael Dougherty, Cheryl Miller, Peter Suderman, and others.

The interview discusses Custer’s background as a campus activist, for which the Phillips Foundation recognized him with a Reagan College Leader Scholarship in 2002 and 2003 at Ithaca College. He also gives the following advice for students:

I have always been inspired by William F. Buckley’s activism, founding of National Review, and intellectual leadership during a time when the conservative movement was in its infancy. Use the inspiration of his courage to stand athwart history and declare “stop” on your campus. Be active and don’t allow the Left to dominate the discussion or belittle conservative ideas without legitimate debate. Apply for the Reagan scholarship, network, use ideas from your peers, and take advantage of resources available from organizations like Young America’s Foundation and many others. You are not alone.
