Why no holiday for America’s vice-presidents?

By: AF Editors

When I was a kid, my mom bought me a placemat with little portraits of all forty American presidents (which is how many there were back then). After all while, I knew all of their names and when they held office.

Mostly by accident, I spent some time this afternoon consulting Wikipedia’s list of America’s 47 vice presidents. Half of them were total strangers to me. For all I know, they’re just made up names that some practical joker put on Wikipedia.

If you want to prove you’re a history whiz, then learn the names of these men and the presidents under which they served:

  • Daniel Tompkins
  • Richard Johnson
  • George Dallas
  • William King
  • Henry Wilson
  • William Wheeler
  • Thomas Hendricks
  • Levi Morton
  • Charles Fairbanks
  • James Sherman
  • Thomas Marshall
  • Charles Curtis

Bonus question: How many vice presidents have died in office?

One more bonus question: How many times has the vice presidency been vacant for longer than 12 months? When was the longest vacancy?
