What role does formal and informal education play in our society? What extent, if any, should the government play in mandating education requirements? To whom or what institutions do we credit our own education (formal or informal) to?

Join AFF-Milwaukee for our first Big Thinkers’ Book Club of 2020 to discuss these questions and more on March 4 at the Library Room at the Cudahy Tower from 6pm to 8pm. We’ll be discussing Educated, by Tara Westover.

Named one of The New York Times Best Books of 2018, Educated is a memoir about Westover’s unconventional upbringing without any formal education until she decided to pursue it herself at age 17. With no prior classroom experience, she taught herself enough math, reading and science to take the ACT, attended and graduated from college and later went on to earn a PhD at Cambridge and a fellowship at Harvard.

Read the book beforehand, or come ready to discuss and decide if you’d like to read it later! Dinner and drinks will be provided, and the conversation will be moderated by AFF’s Advisory Board.
