Economic Development: A Good Deal or a Raw Deal?

Ohio’s Economic Development agencies are supposed to spur economic growth, but are their recommendations and arrangements always a deal good for Ohioans? For instance, One Columbus, the economic development organization for the Columbus region, offered Amazon a $2.6 billion package of incentives to bring HQ2 to the city in 2018— including 100% property tax abatement at all Amazon sites for 15 years. Or JobsOhio, the state’s privatized economic development agency, which is funded by a long-term lease of the state’s liquor operation but operates as a non-profit organization with zero transparency.

Join AFF Columbus as we host a discussion with Representative Jay Edwards (HD 94) and John C. Mozena, president of the Center for Economic Accountability, to consider what’s really going on in this intersection of big business and big government. They’ll talk about how the giant economic development industry justifies its growing appetite for public financing, its impact on Ohioans, and reform recommendations to reign it in.

Join us at the Athletic Club of Columbus starting at 5:30 PM to meet and network with other young professionals from Columbus. Our discussion will begin at 6:30 PM. Appetizers will be provided and your first drink is on us!
