Pontiff-icating on the Free Market: Is Pope Francis for Capitalism?
June 25, 2014 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Sullivan's Steak House
415 North Dearborn, Chicago,
With the publication of his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) in November 2013, Pope Francis ignited a firestorm of debate about his views on capitalism and free markets. Some have interpreted this as evidence that the Pope is some kind of crypto-socialist, advocating for political systems that encourage the large-scale redistribution of wealth in society. Others claim that the Pope’s message is being misunderstood and seized upon by those with a political agenda of their own.
So, what’s the truth? Is Pope Francis an opponent of the free market?
