About The Heartland Institute
Founded in 1984, The Heartland Institute is an independent national nonprofit research organization. It is a tax-exempt charity under Section 501(c)(3). Heartland’s mission is to discover, develop, and promote free-market solutions to social and economic problems. Heartland produces books, policy studies, booklets, podcasts, newsletters, op-eds, and online videos. It contacts the nations legislators more frequently than any other think tank.

In addition to a full-time staff of 24, approximately 500 academics and professional economists participate in Heartland’s peer-review process as policy advisors and more than 300 elected officials serve on its Legislative Forum. More than a dozen senior fellows are available to write, speak, or comment in-depth on a wide range of policy issues.

About the Opening
The Heartland Institute’s Development Coordinator advances The Heartland Institute’s mission of discovering, developing, and promoting free-market solutions to social and economic problems by fulfilling critical donor communications responsibilities. Core duties include calling donors on the phone, helping to arrange donor meetings for Heartland's leadership team, communicating with donors via email, researching donor giving capacity and contact information, managing personalized donor mailings, responding to emails and phone calls, and making updates to the donor database.

The position requires an outgoing, affable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented individual with strong verbal communication skills, committed to advancing the mission of The Heartland Institute.

Qualified candidates will have the ability to quickly establish rapport with donors, especially over the phone, to know or be able to learn how to use online client relationship management system, be a clear and persuasive writer, have a positive disposition, and most importantly enjoy talking to like-minded philanthropists on the phone. They must be trustworthy to handle sensitive donor information, be a team player willing to assist on tasks where needed, and be able to work well with other development staff and with other departments at Heartland.

The Development Coordinator reports to Heartland’s Executive Director of Development. Ideally, the Development Coordinator will be located within commuting distance of Heartland’s Arlington Heights, IL office and be available to work from the office 1-2 days per week. Fully-remote arrangements will be considered for exceptional candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Call new and existing donors to thank them for their contributions and learn more about their philanthropic interests
  • Call and email donors (and some prospects) to arrange donor meetings for the Heartland leadership team
  • Make cultivation calls to maintain donor relationships
  • Use online platforms to look up contact information for donors
  • Use online platforms to research donor and prospect giving capacity
  • Enter call notes and contact information about donors into the database (Salesforce)
  • Identify, research, and cultivate foundation donors by mailing letters of inquiry and holding exploratory phone calls
  • Identify and research prospective individual donors
  • Manage other personal email communications with donors
  • Assist with occasional department mailings
  • Send Heartland publications, notices, releases, op-eds, research, commentary, and other soft touches to donors and prospects via mail and email
  • Assist with the anniversary Benefit Dinner and other development events
  • Represent the organization at public functions
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • At least two years of professional experience, preferably in fundraising or other constituent communications
  • Interest in public policy and the conservative/liberty movement
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, professionalism, and the ability to thrive in tight deadlines
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, taking responsibility for accomplishing tasks quickly and accurately
  • Alignment with Heartland’s core values and mission; ability to articulate the critical role Heartland plays in expanding freedom
  • Very strong communication skills, both written and verbal; high attention to detail is essential
  • Integrity in managing sensitive and confidential information
  • Collaborative spirit, works well with colleagues and leadership in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Experience with client relationship management platforms (Salesforce) preferred
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to use online research platforms for current and prospective donors

Salary and Compensation
Starting salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Performance reviews are conducted annually by the Executive Director of Development.  The Heartland Institute also offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, HSA contributions, life insurance, covered fees for a 401(k) plan, and a generous paid time-off plan.
