The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) seeks a Director of Academic Funding Programs to fill a leadership position within the organization.

Our vision is that scholars in the IHS academic community have the support they need to advance higher education’s true purpose—serving as an emancipator of the human mind and an incubator of human progress. Through its programs, the Institute promotes the study of liberty across a broad range of disciplines, encouraging toleration, open inquiry, respectful challenge, and rigorous scholarship.

Each year IHS awards over $1 million in fellowships, research, and career development support to current and emerging scholars. Reporting to the Managing Director of Programs, the Director is responsible for the vision, strategy, and execution of IHS’s funding programs. The Director oversees a small team and is responsible for leading exemplary performance and achieving strategic objectives. The Director would also be responsible for ensuring we have the right systems and processes in place to collaborate efficiently and effectively with other teams at IHS, notably Academic Relations.

The Director must be a strategic thinker with a keen understanding of academia, superior communication and interpersonal skills, and experience developing and implementing processes. The person holding this position works closely with the Managing Director of Programs as well as other senior directors and executive leadership, playing an integral role in meeting the organization’s vision and strategic goals as well as exemplifying and inculcating IHS's core values.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Own funding programs vision and strategy, delivery of strategic objectives, and day-to-day administration (marketing, application review process, budget management, etc.).
  • Regularly identify opportunities to refine our strategy and scale funding programs, where appropriate and in line with the needs of IHS's academic community.
  • Ensure a manageable, predictable, and highly efficient work flow and knowledge-sharing within the team and across the organization, maintaining clear lines of communication and collaborative partnership with other internal stakeholders.
  • Supervise a small team, inculcating clear expectations regarding IHS's core values and exemplifying them consistently.
  • Serve as a key partner to the executive leadership team, facilitating org-wide communication, thoughtful change management, and a positive work culture in line with the IHS values.
  • Travel up to 25% of time to academic conferences and IHS events to engage face-to-face with our faculty network.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • A strong appreciation for classical liberal principles (individual rights, free markets, limited government, voluntarism, and peace).
  • A terminal degree in any field is advantageous, and an advanced degree or extensive experience in higher education is a minimum.
  • Deep familiarity with -- and experience working within -- an academic environment.
  • A demonstrated record of success in developing productive relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in budget development and management.
  • Excellent writing, editing, meeting management, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, with experience implementing and refining processes and an ability to work well under pressure, roll with changes, meet deadlines, and set priorities for self and reports.
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
