About the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation

The Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation is the official foundation dedicated to preserving the legacy and promoting the values of America’s 30th president. The Coolidge Foundation was formed in 1960 by John Coolidge, the president’s son. The Foundation maintains two bases. The first is the president’s birthplace in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, a beautiful and historic site where the Foundation works in cooperation with the state of Vermont. The second base is Coolidge House in Washington D.C.’s Georgetown neighborhood. The Foundation operates a number of programs on a national scale that seek to share Coolidge’s legacy and values, including: hard work, restrained government, thrift, bipartisanship, respect for free enterprise, federalism, the rule of law, and civility. “Let men in office substitute the midnight oil for the limelight,” Coolidge said.  The Foundation’s signature initiative is the Coolidge Scholars Program, a prestigious, full-ride, four-year merit scholarship that recipients can use at any accredited college in America. The Foundation also operates a top-level national high school economic debate program which culminates each year with the Coolidge Cup National Championship. The Coolidge Foundation is just opening Coolidge House to the public, with a new Coolidge exhibit. There the Foundation will host events, seminars, and conferences. The Coolidge Foundation is not a federally-funded presidential library, and depends on private charity for its operations.

About the Executive Director Opening

The Coolidge Foundation is expanding. We seek an Executive Director to join senior management and lead operations. The Executive Director will be based full time in Washington, D.C., with a commitment to support and lead events in Vermont at various points in the year. The Executive Director will work closely with, and report to, the CEO/Chair (Amity Shlaes). The Executive Director will also be working with Matthew Denhart, who will be transitioning into a CFO role in January 2021. Coolidge is a community. This post is a senior-level position responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Foundation.

The Executive Director position is a hands-on post. We are a non-bureaucratic foundation, and move fast. Our team is small and punches above its weight.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the face of the Foundation at internal events and as a key model and symbol of the institution, effectively building enthusiasm for Coolidge and Coolidge principles across numerous stakeholders
  • Oversee the Foundation’s operations and programming, including the full-ride Coolidge Scholarship, a national high school economic debate program, significant Coolidge celebrations, fundraising events, and intellectual programming including events, lectures, conferences, etc.
  • Manage and inspire small staff teams in Washington, D.C., and Plymouth Notch, Vermont, to ensure programs are executed at the highest-level of quality and that they remain oriented to Coolidge principles
  • Engage in fundraising, providing spotless marketing materials and making the case for Coolidge programs via phone mail, and in key face-to-face meetings with potential supporters
  • Manage and inspire high school and college-aged Coolidge Foundation program participants to strengthen and grow a national community of Coolidge enthusiasts
  • Oversee administration of Coolidge House in Washington and the Coolidge Foundation’s office and property in Plymouth Notch, Vermont
  • Join CEO and CFO in sustaining and expanding Coolidge Foundation work from the inside and aid in preparing for the Coolidge Centennial in 2023
  • Oversee and participate in webinars; oversee websites and social media
  • Write, edit and produce clean, well-crafted, scholarly articles, marketing documents,  print and web communications, debate briefs (law school level), college and scholarship recommendations, essays in the Coolidge Quarterly and spotless updates for high-level stakeholders including donors and trustees

We seek an individual with the following attributes:

  • 5-10+ years of professional experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree; masters in economics or history valued
  • Strong track record of meticulous and competent administration of substantial programming, with success meeting deadlines, developing and staying within budgets, and executing at the highest level of quality
  • Demonstrated passion for history and historical accuracy
  • Demonstrated passion for Coolidge values of government thrift, bipartisanship, federalism, respect for religious faith, small-town government and the rule of law
  • Management experience and ability to shape, guide, and inspire staff
  • Ability to work closely with the CEO
  • Ability to work with senior management to operate and expand programs
  • Ability and willingness to support the operational side of fundraising
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including an ability to write at post-college level and grasp and explain serious policy themes
  • Experience in public speaking and public representation
  • A strong commitment to the principle of academic merit and the ability to oversee a highly competitive national college scholarship
  • Discretion, high level of integrity, and sound judgment
  • Lead stakeholders in the Foundation’s planning for the 2023 Centennial of the Coolidge Presidency
  • Ability to work with partner institutions such as the State of Vermont, the Coolidge Library in Northampton, the White House Historical Association, etc.
  • Ability to work in Excel and willingness to work with and learn development and college admissions software
  • Interest in governance and a willingness to learn how to generate and edit board materials and governance documents

To help the Coolidge Foundation grow, the individual must understand the importance of staying mission focused, and appreciate and help realize the vision of the board. The Executive Director is supported by a small but talented team. The Executive Director reports to the CEO.
