About the Jack Miller Center:

The Jack Miller Center (JMC) is a non-partisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to promoting education in America’s founding principles and history, an education vital to thoughtful and engaged citizenship. We work to advance the teaching and study of America's history, its political and economic institutions and the central principles, ideas and questions arising from the American and Western traditions, all of which continue to animate our national life.

Our Work :

At the college level, JMC conducts summer institutes for young scholars, national and regional programs for professors, and sponsors courses, events, fellowships, and student activities on campuses. At the K-12 level, JMC works with partner professors and institutions to provide content-based graduate and professional development programs for K-12 teachers in a growing number of regions. JMC also offers an array of resources for educators at all levels that will help them bring American history and founding principles back into the education of young Americans.

Position Overview:

This position will work in partnership with our development, communications, and academic teams to promote a full range of development activities for the Jack Miller Center. Primary responsibilities include building relationships with key foundations and writing grants on behalf of the Jack Miller Center and submitting timely and accurate reports for all existing grant funded projects.

The Grant Writer/Foundation Relations Officer will report to the Director of Development.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources.
  • Research prospective foundations and corporations for new grant opportunities.
  • Comply with all grant reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors.
  • Build stewardship reports to current donors, including regular written updates to corporate and foundation donors.
  • Understanding of institutional history and programs.
  • Make appointments for Executive Director with foundation officers and other prospects, arrange for onsite tours for supporters (foundation officers, foundation trustees).
  • Maintain current records in database and in paper files, including grant tracking and reporting.
  • Track statistics relevant to development and provide department with written materials necessary for donor stewardship (visitor number and diversity, educational program attendance, etc).
  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong written communication and editing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Knowledge and familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research
  • Strong contributor in team environments

Qualifications:

  • A four-year undergraduate degree
  • Two years of writing experience
  • Two years of experience with grant writing and foundation relations is preferred but above all, we are seeking an exceptional writer
  • The willingness to travel for JMC events and meetings
  • A belief in the mission of the JMC and the ability to articulate that mission
  • Experience working in deadline-driven environments
  • Able to work well in a team environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Able to monitor and meet income goals
  • Experience with contact management systems a plus, particularly Salesforce and the Microsoft office suite
