Position Description

FIRE is seeking an experienced paralegal to support all aspects of our strategic litigation to defend student and faculty rights nationwide. The Paralegal will report to the Vice President of Litigation, and will work alongside our Litigation Assistant, Staff Attorneys, the Legal Director, and occasionally the Director of FIRE’s Faculty Legal Defense Fund. Additionally, the Paralegal will communicate and coordinate with other FIRE departments, external attorneys, and clients.

The duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing court filings and proper service, including reading and interpreting court rules to ensure compliance with applicable rules;
  • Preparing tables of contents and authorities cite-checking, and proofreading legal briefs and documents;
  • Preparing summonses, motions, affidavits, or declarations, and drafting templates of other legal documents;
  • Managing litigation calendar by calculating, calendaring, and tracking dates for hearings and deadlines for all court filings;
  • Conducting basic legal research, including drafting profiles on judges;
  • Managing the Litigation Department’s secure document management system (Net Documents) and organizing, tracking, and managing litigation documents and files;
  • Assisting attorneys with discovery by reviewing and organizing documents;
  • Managing preparation and logistics for depositions, hearings, pretrial tasks, court conferences, and trials;
  • Managing the Litigation Department’s “FIRE in the Courts” webpage;
  • Assisting with producing, formatting, uploading, and sending correspondence to colleges, attorneys, courts, legislators, and other recipients for Litigation Department, FIRE’s Individual Rights Defense Program, and Legislative and Policy Departments;
  • Assisting with preparing and filing documents with legislative bodies and other organizations or individuals;
  • Managing open records act requests; and
  • Administrative responsibilities, including managing metrics and other statistics derived from the case management system.

The expected start date for this position is June 7, 2021.


Three or more years of paralegal experience in a litigation setting is required. Additionally, well-qualified candidates will possess:

  • Exceptional organizational skills and sharp attention to detail;
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office, G Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and related programs;
  • Expertise in preparing legal documents for filing and service, including proficiency with PACER and ECF;
  • Expertise in cite-checking and proofreading legal work product;
  • Proficiency with LexisNexis, WestLaw, Bloomberg, and related research services;
  • Experience with Net Documents;
  • Proficiency working in multiple federal jurisdictions;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including but not limited to phone and email courtesy and an ability to properly manage sensitive information to maintain confidence of students, faculty, and colleagues;
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments quickly and with excellence; and
  • Familiarity with and support for organizational mission.

Salary and Compensation

Starting salary is negotiable and depends upon experience and education level. FIRE conducts periodic evaluations where employees may receive raises or bonuses for outstanding and excellent work.
