About Kansas Policy Institute
The Kansas Policy Institute (KPI) is a non-profit education and research organization. KPI was founded in 1996 and maintains offices in Wichita and Overland Park (Kansas City Metro). We engage citizens and policy-makers with research and information to enact public policy solutions that protect the constitutional right to freedom of all Kansans, give them greater access to better educational opportunities, and allow them to keep more of what they earn. Protecting and promoting freedom will improve everyones quality of life, make Kansas more competitive with other states, and attract new citizens and businesses.

About the Role
The Kansas Policy Institute seeks a Policy Analyst and Manager of the Institutes Center for Entrepreneurial Government to coordinate economic research with an eye to counseling state and local government to be more entrepreneurial. While entrepreneurial government may seem a contradiction in terms, it is KPIs belief that only when state and local government becomes more efficient and effective will civil society and the economy be able to thrive.

This position will play a key role in developing the research topics and publications for the only free market think tank in the state. The Manager will also be responsible for bringing different stakeholders together to solve specific problems with solutions aimed at making governments – both state and local – within Kansas more efficient.

A successful candidate will have excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to communicate complex economic policy ideas in a meaningful way to Kansans from all walks of life, helping them to understand that KPIs principles allow every Kansan to achieve prosperity and have a shot at their American Dream. This will be a forward-facing role responsible for actively finding new opportunities around the state to help local communities and governments address the policy challenges facing our state.

The Policy Analyst and Manager will be based in KPIs Overland Park (Kansas City Metro) or Wichita offices. A virtual office within the state of Kansas is possible for the right candidate.

The position will report to KPIs President with daily interaction with the organizations CEO. This role could be a fit for someone just entering the policy space, but also for someone 6+ years into their career looking to make a move and take the next step.

Responsibilities
Duties for this role will include but are not limited to:

  • Help develop and execute KPI’s economic research agenda in coordination with organizational leadership
  • Effectively communicate KPI research findings and recommendations to elected officials, the media, and the public
  • Author and edit a variety of publications, including longer research studies and short written pieces (briefs, opinion pieces, blog posts, and etc.) for publication by KPI, coalition partners, and other print media
  • Represent KPI at events and speaking engagements, as well as through a variety of news, on-line, and social media platforms
  • Provide expertise to state and local governments on opportunities to solve problems, be more efficient, and allow for more economic prosperity

Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have:

  • 0-10 years of experience in public policy analysis with experience communicating that analysis, may substitute professional experience with substantive academic work
  • Undergraduate degree in economics or related field of study; a Masters degree is preferred but not required
  • Strong skills in economic and policy analysis
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time
  • Flexibility to help across other organizational functions as part of a small organizational team
  • Strong communication skills with demonstrated ability to explain complex issues in easily understood terms through longer research publications, short written pieces, and through print and broadcast media
  • A demonstrated commitment to the ideals of limited government, economic freedom, and personal liberty
