Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows is one of my favorite modern horror films. Why? It’s very meta. It’s a film about people making a film about what happened to people who made a film about a local legend and how the local legend is then able to manipulate the film to induce unusual behavior among the people making the film about the film about the legend to expand its influence and confound rich white suburbia. It’s a work of art, really.
I actually think BW2 got a bad rap, insofar as it’s not the worst movie I’ve ever seen though it was treated as such upon release. But to call it a work of art — when it was as naked a money-grab as could be imagined, full stop — is a stretch, to put it mildly.
