Some light football blogging

By: Sonny Bunch

Apparently Brett Favre is coming back. Again. Mind if I rant for a minute? Didn’t think so.

I’m a lifelong Packers fan, grew up worshipping Brett Favre. I will routinely make the argument amongst friends and enemies alike that Favre is one of the five greatest quarterbacks of all time. I don’t think this is particularly controversial: He tops all the statistical categories, has won a Super Bowl, and won three MVP awards. Nobody else has a resume like his. I own a signed photo, one of the few pieces of memorabilia I own. I even quietly cheered for him when he went to the Jets after getting the itch to play again; hey, he retired too early, nothing personal. Welcome back to the NFL, Brett.

But if he comes back a second time — to play with the NFC North rival Vikings, no less — I hope someone takes him out (in the normal course of play, obviously…no late hits or blindside helmet-to-helmet spears or anything like that). Playing for the Jets wasn’t personal. At this point, however, it’s pretty obvious that he’s looking to stick it to the Packers and their GM, Ted Thompson, who made the oh-so-selfish decision to move ahead with the team’s reconstruction after Brett made it abundantly clear he didn’t want to play any more (the first time he retired, two seasons ago). And you want to stick it to my team, Brett? I stick it to you. Give someone on the roster the number 4. Put together a hate-tape for when he strolls into Lambeau. Institute a bounty on his head. Do whatever it takes, but make him suffer. You’re not bigger than the team, Favre. Congrats. You’ve destroyed a decade and a half of goodwill. Dick.
