Episode 3: How GPS Changed Our Lives, with Josh Morales

By: AF Editors

Since he was a child, Joshua Morales has always been interested in how things work. His father even tells a story of how five-year-old Joshua found some tools in the garage, and promptly used them to disassemble a new wagon his parents had just bought.

Needless to say, Joshua has come a long way from taking wagons apart. In his current position as CEO of Starnav LLC, Joshua works to launch emerging technologies into the American and global markets, specializing in GPS and navigation. Joshua’s constant drive to learn the inner workings of the word around him led to his research at UC-Irvine, where he completed a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, while also resulting in over 25 publications and 5 co-invented patents along the way.

In our conversation with Joshua we discussed the foundational place GPS now occupies in society and our daily lives, his work to find GPS alternatives, his experience completing his Ph.D., and what it takes to both research new technologies as well as bring them into the marketplace. “The Department of Homeland Security has said that thirteen critical structures in the U.S. are critically dependent on GPS. We went from when we were kids with little flip phones to an age where we are so dependent on GPS that’s there’s a major problem there, and I knew I wanted to work on this problem.”
