What does it mean to defend freedom in the shadow of an increasingly assertive authoritarian regime?

Join America’s Future for an engaging conversation with two speakers from the Taiwan Liberty Society as they examine the economic, social, and generational dimensions of the Chinese Communist Party’s coercion campaign against a free and democratic Taiwan.

The discussion will explore how Beijing’s pressure shapes everyday life in Taiwan—from economic uncertainty and international isolation to the ways younger generations understand the challenges facing their country. Speakers will also examine how digital platforms, including Douyin, are influencing political attitudes, civic engagement, and democratic values among Taiwan’s youth.

As tensions in the Indo-Pacific continue to shape global affairs, this conversation offers valuable insight into one of the world’s most important struggles for liberty and self-determination.

Light bites and drinks will be provided, with plenty of time before and after the program to connect with fellow members and guests.

Speakers

Yu-Hsi (Lucy) Liu
Associate Professor at Shih-Hsin University and Executive Director of the Taiwan Liberty Society

Yu-Hsi (Lucy) Liu is a Taiwanese economist, scholar, and founder of the Taiwan Liberty Society. Her research focuses on empirical political economy, the Chinese Communist Party’s influence operations against Taiwan, cognitive warfare, and whole-of-society defense resilience. She currently serves on the Taiwan Presidential Office’s Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee.

Beyond academia, Liu has played a leading role in strengthening Taiwan’s civil society by organizing joint training programs and tabletop exercises that connect volunteer civil defense organizations with government agencies. Her work is dedicated to helping Taiwan build resilience against hybrid threats while safeguarding its democratic institutions.

Byron Li
Student Member, Taiwan Liberty Society

Byron Li is a high school student at Asia American International Academy (AAIA) in Taiwan with a passion for international relations, geopolitics, economics, and public policy. Since joining the Taiwan Liberty Society in 2025, he has been actively involved in advancing its mission to defend freedom and democracy in Taiwan.

An award-winning debater, Byron earned the Gold Medal in Team Debate and the Silver Medal in Debate at the 2025 World Scholar’s Cup. He also co-authored the academic paper Rethinking Governance and Democratic Legitimacy in Ukraine, drawing on his advocacy for Ukraine during the summer of 2025. Outside the classroom, Byron serves as president of the AAIA School Orchestra and is an accomplished trombone player.
