One topic that at once seemed outlandish has now risen to a fever pitch – the concept of student loan forgiveness is an idea that simply won’t go away. And for good reason; the cost of a college education has sky-rocketed while wages remain low. Younger generations face massive sums of debt, and in turn are delaying major life progressions (marriage, home ownership, children etc.) in order to pay it off. Proponents of the idea claim it will unleash billions of capital into the market as people, freed from this burden, get to spending. Opponents however claim this would be a massive transfer of wealth from the less fortunate, to the more so, and that it provides an important lesson about personal responsibility. Are there other alternatives to helping those facing high repayment terms in a tough economy?
