AF-SE: Should Books Be Banned?
July 1, 2025 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Rancho Lewis
1503 King Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29403
Join AF-Southeast for dinner at Rancho Lewis as we debate the timely and critical question: Should books be banned?
Inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s own dinner parties that brought together diverse groups to creatively solve civic issues, this evening is designed to foster new viewpoints and perspectives. In America today, there has been a surge of book bans across public libraries and schools (16,000 books since 2021!). The rationale behind book bans, covering well-known titles like To Kill a Mockingbird, A Court of Thrones and Roses, and 1984, has ranged from profanity, violence, race, sexuality, gender, and religion, to parental rights.
We’ll talk about reasons for and against book banning, potential impacts on education and free speech, and its role in shaping public discourse today.
This Jeffersonian dinner is an opportunity to learn and understand. We encourage open minds, thoughtful contributions, and a willingness to listen to varying perspectives. To ensure an intimate and impactful conversation, we are limiting the guest count to just 14 participants.
Come prepared to share your insights, challenge your assumptions, and connect with young professionals in the Lowcountry over a great meal.
