In which I out myself as a geek

By: David Polansky

Well, I’m certainly pleased that HBO has green-lit one of my favorite series on the planet. I’ve long hoped for something like a fantasy version of The Wire: something with its depth and complexity but shot like an epic.

But, good God, they can only film so much if he won’t finish the freaking series. And, judging by Mr. Martin’s somewhat irate tone, he’s not terribly pleased with the fans’ carping — never a good sign. Look, I’m sure he feels like a mother with several hundred thousand kids wondering when dinner will be ready. But it’s been years, now. We’re hungry, and there’s still like three more books to go.

You know, when Robert Jordan joined the choir invisible one book away from completing his mammoth series, I’ll admit it: I laughed. Now, I realize this makes me a bad person but, contra Mr. Douthat, I never much dug his stuff anyway. Plus, he was like eleven books into it. This wasn’t some sort of Hendrixian scenario: “oh, just imagine what he could have accomplished,” etc. I’d say he had a fair shot.

But, frankly, I’m not laughing so hard now.
