AF Jackson Hosts Inaugural Event: “Legislation and Libations” in Mississippi

By: Kathryn Shelton

On December 17, 2013, the founders of the new Jackson, Mississippi chapter of America’s Future Foundation held a kick-off event to launch the new chapter.  The event, “Legislation and Libations,” was held at local pub Hal & Mal’s and drew roughly 30 attendees.

The launch event focused on beer laws in Mississippi and how prohibition-era laws impacted the Mississippi alcohol marketplace.  Three expert panelists participated in the event:

  • Craig Hendry, president and co-founder of Raise Your Pints, a grassroots nonprofit organization aimed at bringing high-quality beers into Mississippi by broadening alcohol laws and regulations;
  • Patsy Holeman, director of the Mississippi Alcohol Beverage Control, which regulates the legal and responsible dispensing of alcoholic beverages within the state; and
  • Ricky Brown, president of the Mississippi Malt Beverage Association, which represents and promotes the beer wholesalers and beer industry within Mississippi.

AF event attendees listened as panelists answered questions about Mississippi’s burdensome alcohol laws and regulations, and audience members also had an opportunity to ask questions after the formal presentation was over.

This unique and interesting event is the first of what is sure to be many events hosted by the new AF Jackson chapter.  With that in mind, AF congratulates chapter leader Rebekah Staples and AF Jackson board members  Ben Moncrief, Drew Maddox, Elizabeth Joseph, Nic Lott and Camp Murphy on a great start!
