Is a Firearm the Hot New Accessory This Spring?

Female gun ownership is on the rise and it’s not just because more men are women nowadays. Yes, the gender gap on gun ownership and attitudes have long been a thing but recent surveys have shown women are the fastest growing demographic purchasing. Since 2019, there has been a huge shift in gun ownership by women. According to the 2021 National Firearms Survey conducted by Harvard and Northwestern, nearly 50% of new gun owners were women between January 2019 and April 2021. This is part of a much larger trend that National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) noted includes a 77% rise in female gun ownership from 2005 to 2020. So, I ask you ladies of liberty, if you haven’t considered buying one yet, why not?

There are many reasons liberty-loving ladies should consider gun ownership. The top reason, however, should be no surprise – self-defense. Despite violent crime being near 30-year lows, we have seen an increase the last couple of years and anyone can find themselves under attack. The reality is that women are often targeted for violent crimes, such as assault, rape, and domestic violence, and may be physically overpowered by their attackers. A firearm can give women a means to defend themselves and level the playing field in a dangerous situation where physical strength or size might otherwise put women at a disadvantage. This is why firearms are often referred to as “the great equalizer”. Even if a woman never has to use her firearm in self-defense, knowledge of how to use and access to one would be in her self-interest. Better to have one and never need it than need it and not have it. 

Of course, for a beginner it can be quite daunting to figure out where to begin so let’s go over the basics. 

Start off thinking about your personal needs and reasons. Are you seeking a firearm for keeping in your purse, car, or home? Are you seeking to use it solely for self-defense or sport? Different types of firearms suit different needs based on their size, weight, and caliber. Spend some time researching the differences between handguns, shotguns, and rifles to understand their various applications and features. However, for simple self-defense, a handgun will likely be what you want. I will recommend some below.

The next step would be to research your state and local laws. Familiarize yourself with the gun laws in your area. They can vary widely even within the same state. Organizations like the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) can provide information on local gun laws and be your one stop shop to stay up to date with the latest.

Before you commit to one firearm, I highly recommend you go to a shooting range and test out various firearms at a shooting range. This will help you determine which firearm feels most comfortable and is best suited for your needs. Many shooting ranges offer rental programs, allowing you to try a variety of firearms before purchasing one. The NRA also hosts regular Women on Target Clinics programming that is a welcoming female only event to help first-timers. You want it to feel comfortable in your hand and that you have control over the recoil. Smaller the caliber, the easier it will be to handle and use accurately. Don’t be fooled by the size, a .22 will get the job done.

After you’ve found one you feel comfortable with and within your price range, I’d recommend you include in your purchase accessories, such as holsters and cases, ammunition for regular practice, and cleaning supplies. Proper maintenance and practice will ensure your firearms longevity and hone your skills.

I encourage you to enroll in a firearm safety course as well to learn about proper handling, storage, and maintenance for your new firearm. The NRA and NSSF offer certified firearm safety courses across the United States.
