Spreading the Word of Liberty Beyond our Borders

By: Matthew Hartill

With AF’s writing fellows program, you give freedom a voice!

Katarina grew up during Guatemala’s post-civil war. As an AF Writing Fellow and full-time researcher, she was able to find other free-market advocates. She has appeared on CNN en Español and published work on Cap X and Dissident. Through her work with AF, she realized her passion for advancing freedom.

My family lived in Guatemala as the communists fought for economic control. As landowners, they were deeply affected by that. The more I researched economics and the more I wrote, the more my parent’s stories and hardships made sense.  Their struggle became more personal once I began telling others about their experiences.”

Now she uses this passion to combat communism’s harms through writing. In AF’s Writing Program, Katarina experimented with different styles and learned from published experts. She had lots of research experience, but was new to op-eds and investigative journalism.

I had started new writing styles and AF gave me an amazing foundation. AF’s Writing Program just feels so personal and individualized. Working directly with an established journalist like Stephanie Slade was a unique opportunity.”

Katarina has graduated from AF’s Writing Program and she plans on getting published even more. Right now, she is writing an economic history of the Soviet Union. In the future, she hopes to publish a complete history of communism in Latin America. She currently works for Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation and Universidad Francisco Marroquin’s “Market Trends”. Her favorite book was Ludwig von Mises’ Human Action, which inspired her to lead a free-market book club with her friends. Thanks to your help, she hopes to work for free-market think tanks for many years to come.
