Won't someone please think of the children?

By: Sonny Bunch

No, seriously. There’s a story about sex offenders being forced out of participating in Halloween in Maryland. Sounds reasonable to me. But there’s always someone out there willing to defend the indefensible:

I know the subject of policing of sex offenders is a touchy one, but I think I agree with Samhita that these policies don’t get at the overall problem here, which is the lack of services to address the underlying problems. Also, the stigmatization of formerly incarcerated people is a serious problem. Once someone has been incarcerated, regardless of how law-abiding they might be for the rest of their lives, they are consistently discriminated against.

Maybe sex offenders are consistently discriminated against because they have the highest rates of recidivism:

One review of recidivism rates (p.7) found: “Incest offenders ranged between 4 and 10 percent. Rapists ranged between 7 and 35 percent. Child molesters with female victims ranged between 10 and 29 percent. Child molesters with male victims ranged between 13 and 40 percent. Exhibitionists ranged between 41 and 71 percent.”

But yeah, we should probably worry about hurting the feelings of the kiddie-touchers more than the future kids they might rape. Sounds reasonable to me.
