Winning the American Culture War 101

The American culture war has been going on for decades. We see it everywhere, from work, vacation, and even walking down the sidewalk where just 100 feet away from you is a protest. This battle is between those who believe America is the greatest place to live on the planet versus those who think America is a systemically racist country and by all means, do not believe America is an exceptional country. A huge chunk of the culture war is being fought at American colleges and universities. 

Picture this, it is your first day of freshman year of college. You are starting a new chapter in your life. You are excited, ambitious, and ready to take on the real world. Then you attend your first class and the professor asks the class to introduce themselves by name, major, and what your pronouns are. When your turn is up, you decide not to share what your pronouns are. Students around you start calling you xenophobic, homophobic, and other words you just recently learned.

As I have mentioned in a previous blog post, Run For Student Government to Make A Change on Your College Campus, it was not until the late 2000s that these institutions of higher education were places of free thought, exchanging ideas, and where different ideas are accepted. Now, higher education is no longer that. They have turned into indoctrination camps where whatever the professor says is law, any dissent is prohibited, and they are attacked for advancing pro-liberty causes on campus. The majority of students, who are anti-liberty, agree with these professors. It is ok to disagree with a professor when they share their opinion. Especially in classes in political science, different opinions are shared very often. These students need to learn that having differing opinions is okay.

The campus college war has taken new heights in recent years. Just last year, Lia Thomas, a biological male, broke a University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming record. There was intense backlash over Thomas breaking the record that was previously held by a woman, in addition to winning an NCAA record. The norm society is trying to push is Thomas is living her true self as a woman. What society is not telling us is Thomas is bigger and stronger than everyone else in the pool which includes a different set of chromosomes (X, Y) larger internal organs, and muscular strength.

And just recently, Meghan Cortez-Fields, a student at Ramapo College of New Jersey, my alma mater, broke the women’s 100-yard butterfly record. However, Cortez-Fields is a biological male, just like Thomas. It was met with an intense backlash from current students, alumni, and parents. Days later, she received multiple death threats for breaking the record.

That is not all that has happened at Ramapo. Just this past Saturday, a professor at Ramapo posted an antisemitic graphic on her personal Facebook page. Yet, many professors will condone safe spaces for students who feel uncomfortable or stressed out with the amount of work they have to do.

There are many ways one can help fight the campus culture war. One of the easiest ways is to get involved on campus with organizations that best-fit one’s beliefs, and if someone wants to make a major change on their college campus, they can run for Student Government. In my previous blog post, I mentioned we need more liberty-minded students in college SGA chapters. This can happen by recruiting individuals who are not only qualified but also can be effective change agents in the SGA.

I have been saying this for a long time. The liberty movement is losing the culture war, it all starts by influencing the minds on our college campuses. If we lose the culture war, our country may never be the same again.
