Learn it, Live it, Love it: The American Dream Edition

By: Cindy Cerquitella

Learn it:

Carrie Sheffield, 2018 Buckley Award winner, is interviewed by the Wall Street Journal’s Secrets of Wealthy Women Series. She shares her story of rising from a struggling family to launching a digital media company.

If you live in a city, you’ve likely seen an increase in the number of tents speckling the landscape. These tents represent a safe haven for the many people facing homelessness. This story, which follows the movements of Monica and Pete, a couple who became homeless after their apartment building was shut down by the fire department, paints an important picture and brings humanity to the many people we may pass by everyday. As cities work to address this issue, how do we get to the root cause and identify ways to lift people out of this cycle of poverty?

Live it:

In DC: Join us and other editors, writers, and journalists as we celebrate the 2019 Spring Cohort of Writing Fellows. This event is a great opportunity to network and share your work with fellow writers. See you at Local 16 tonight!

In Chicago: Friends in town for the Philadelphia Society meeting, or based in Chicago, be sure to join us as we hear from AF’s Chairman, and Executive Vice President of the Foundation for Economic Education, Richard Lorenc at the event “How to Talk to People Unlike Us.” We’ll be sharing the transcript of this talk next week, so if you can’t join us live, stay tuned! (7-10 pm Elephant & Castle)

Three cheers for the work of the Beacon Center in Tennessee, who have undertaken a campaign to eliminate barriers that keep normal, everyday people from achieving their American Dream. In a time when a discussion of inequality is ever present, it’s exciting to see think tanks like Beacon (shout-out to AFF-Nashville Leader Taylor!) and others across the country playing an active role in tearing down the unfair rules and regulations that keep people from working hard and earning success.
