AF-Southwest: A Jeffersonian Dinner | The Future of the DNC and Liberal Values

June 29, 2021 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Casa Corazon Restaurant

2637 North 16th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85006

You are invited to join AF-Southwest and our partners at Arizona Talks for a conversation identifying core Liberal values in America.

During a time when founding freedom principles – such as civility and public discourse– are under assault, it is more important than ever before to identify and rally around the distinctive principles and positions as liberty loving young professionals. This is a time to set aside a focus on the personalities of current or past elected officials and to identify and communicate what we stand for in a positive manner.

About half of Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters (47%) describe their own political views as liberal, including 15% who describe their views as very liberal, according to an average of Pew Research Center political surveys conducted in 2019. Liberals outnumber moderates (38%) and conservatives (14%) as a share of Democratic voters. Yet combined, conservatives and moderates continue to make up about half of Democratic voters (51%).

Economically, modern liberalism opposes cuts to the social safety net and supports a role for the government in reducing inequality, providing education, ensuring access to healthcare, regulating economic activity and protecting the natural environment. This form of liberalism took shape in the 20th century United States as the franchise and other civil rights were extended to a larger class of citizens. Major examples include Theodore Roosevelt’s Square Deal and New Nationalism, Woodrow Wilson’s New Freedom, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, Harry S. Truman’s Fair Deal, John F. Kennedy’s New Frontier and Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society.

This Jeffersonian-style dinner will take place in person at Casa Corazon in Phoenix. The night starts with networking, reflections from those around the table, and continues with an engaging conversation on liberal values in our country, our peers and those elected to office.

We encourage AF Hub members to bring a guest they disagree with on this issue, and participate in our lively discussion. Speakers will be announced prior to the event.
