Free speech (except for that with which you disagree)

By: Sonny Bunch

I’ve been following, with some amusement, the travails of Tropic Thunder and that movie’s interaction with the grievance industry. For a (ridiculously over the top) summary, check out AICN. Money paragraph:

Well, a series of Disability Advocacy Groups has decided to attack TROPIC THUNDER for the character of “Simple Jack” – a hilarious send up of – oddly not mentally handicapped citizens, but the actors that use those with mental handicaps to Oscar bait their way into getting their golden trophy. Well, Stiller’s character is an action star that attempts to “get his Oscar” and gets nailed for it. The world turns on his character – and suddenly he finds his entire career at risk. The humor isn’t so much at the sake of the mentally handicap, but at how bad Ben Stiller’s Character is at bringing it to life.

The thing I find most amusing about this whole kerfluffle is Harry’s astonishment that a liberal “do-gooder” group would have a vested interest in stifling someone else’s speech because they dislike what is being said. Apparently Harry hasn’t been on a college campus recently. When Jonah talks about Liberal Fascism, this is what he’s referring to.
