Grand New Party
As this is the week we prepare the annual Summer reading issue at The Weekly Standard, and I am the assistant editor for books and arts of that august publication, I am a wee bit busy this week. For example, I had planned on penning an appreciation of Reihan Salam and Ross Douthat’s new book, Grand New Party. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to even pick up a copy, let alone give it a proper read.*
We’re actually reviewing the duo’s book in said Summer reading issue; Matthew Continetti had the honors. As a taste of both Grand New Party and the bookstravaganza in next week’s Weekly Standard, here is Continetti’s closing line: “Those Republicans who want to keep [working class voters] would do well to read this learned, judicious, and enjoyable book.”
For more prescient judgments and delicious insights like Mr. Continetti’s, make sure to pick up a copy of The Weekly Standard next week. We’ll have Christopher Hitchens on William Safire’s Political Dictionary, Andrew Roberts on the Special Relationship, and much, much more. Well worth your $3.95.
Ross and Reihan, meanwhile, will be at the 18th and L St. Borders tonight to discuss their book from the hours of 6:30 to 7:30. Alas, I won’t be there (I need to attend a screening of Hancock, which I’m kind of excited about), but you should go. It’ll be fun.
*Don’t worry, guys, I just ordered a copy on Amazon. Should be here by the end of the week.
