Learn it, Live it, Love it: The Power to the People Edition

Learn it

Violent responses to public marches are far from a thing of the past. Over the last several weeks, the Sudanese government violently attacked the protestors there, killing nearly 100 so far.

China has a history of disappearing problematic individuals. Recently, they tried to extend that practice in Hong Kong, and citizens are coming out by the millions to protest these encroachments. I’m watching with bated breath, and sending all my hopes and prayers. You can learn more by following free market friends there, like Andrew Work. The government has suspended plans to move forward with this bill… for now, but I shudder to think of what it means for the free people of Hong Kong, and really the world, if they are able to succeed. Protests are ongoing as we speak.

This week, people across the country are celebrating Juneteenth, commemorating June 19th, the day the last slaves in the United States were liberated. Zuri Davis over at Reason offers helpful historical context and makes a case for why this should be a national holiday, akin to Independence Day.

Live it

I’m on Day 5 of the Whole 30, and so far, it’s not been so bad. Who doesn’t want to eat fresh bright vegetables on 80 degree DC days? Anyone tried it and have tips to offer on how to make it through the weekends without being a hermit?

If you’re looking for something to do in Washington, DC, this weekend, the By the People festival is my pick. Choose from performances, exhibitions, and discussions all around the city brought to us by Halcyon. Three cheers for private support of the arts!

Love it

I am always so inspired by the fascinating discussions AF chapters around the country are facilitating. This week I’d like to give a shout out to AFF-New Orleans who packed the house Wednesday night at Port Orleans Brewery. The chapter invited the owners to talk about their entrepreneurial journey and the regulations brewers face in Louisiana – they’re ranked 48th in the country for brewing regulations, who would have thought?

Also, did you hear? AF is launching a new chapter in the Mississippi Gulf Coast NEXT WEEK! Be sure to stop by to hear from Buckley Award winner Aaron Rice!

Finally, it’s summer, and as usual, that childhood rite of passage, the lemonade stand is under threat. But never fear, Country Time is here to save the day and is paying the fines and providing ways to check on the legal status of your stand, and offering ways to request legal changes. #legalizelemonade
