AF around the Country 2019: Leadership Development

By: Cindy Cerquitella

No matter which way you slice it, young people are being asked to take on leadership positions earlier in their careers. To be sure we are equipped to lead, AF chapters around the country offer a variety of leadership development programs. Pair that with our Writing Fellows Program, and our celebration of young leaders through the Buckley Awards. We’re cultivating the next generation of leaders across the country, here’s a peek at what we’ve discussed!

How I’m Building My BusinessIn Milwaukee John Stollenwork, owner of Allen Edmonds Shoes, gave a talk in the chapter’s “How I Built My Business” series and shared insights about leadership and growth. Milwaukee also paid a visit to a local artisan woodworking factory to learn about it’s owner and how he’s working to make his company a success.

AFF-Raleigh hosted a special five week entrepreneurship series that covered the ins and outs of business planning, growth, marketing and financial management. Taught by career coaches and veteran entrepreneurs, this program provided invaluable training to Raleigh’s business community.

AF around the Country 2019: Leadership DevelopmentIn cities across the country, AF and Talent Market teamed up to provide guidance as college students were preparing for their next steps. In Austin, Philadelphia, Detroit and San Jose we shared insights on how to keep advancing liberty after campus.

As the next generation of leaders, we’re excited to learn more from young people eager to dive into the political fray. In Columbus, the youngest State Legislator in Ohio Jenna Powell shared her reasons for running, and how she’s tackling tough issues. In Rhode Island, State Senator Jessica De La Cruz provided an update on all that the legislature has been up to. And in Jackson, MS we drew attention to young leaders like Buckley Award winner Aaron Rice, as well as legislative leaders. Hearing from principled young leaders like these paves the way for others to get engaged in local politics, where limited government voices are rarely heard.
