About Emmet Family Foundation

The Emmet Family Foundation is a private grantmaking foundation based in New York committed to the values of liberty and opportunity.  The Board is hiring a professional staff for the first time in order to prepare for significantly increased, strategic grantmaking.  The Board is interested in supporting a variety of causes, including improving public policy, supporting liberty and opportunity for every American, improving mental health outcomes in communities, spurring biomedical innovation and increasing access to high-quality education for every child and family. The staff will have the opportunity to work closely with the Board to help shape and build a strategy and culture for the Foundation, which will be among the largest in the country in terms of annual giving. The staff will be fully remote and will be mission-driven, experienced team players who enjoy the process of building strategies, processes, teams and cultures.

About the Position

The Emmet Family Charitable Foundation is seeking a curious self-starter to join our team as a Program Officer. The Program Officer will be responsible for ensuring grantmaking in the Health portfolio aligns with the foundation’s mission, managing relationships with the foundation’s grantees during a time of significant growth in the annual charitable giving.  The Health portfolio will focus on a variety of issues related to mental health and biomedical research & innovation.  We are looking for someone with knowledge and experience in the health field. The Program Officer will report directly to the Director of Grants while working closely with the foundation team. This position is fully remote with travel up to 25%.

Responsibilities

Grantee Partnerships & Support

  • Manage relationships with grantees and potential grantees including seeking and performing due diligence, requesting and reviewing proposals and making investment recommendations aligned with assigned portfolio area.
  • Shepherd proposals through the Foundation’s approval process, as well as provide guidance to and work with grantees to achieve impact.
  • Assist grantees in developing and implementing maintenance, monitoring, and funding strategies that lead to the achievement of strategic goals.
  • Support Director of Grants with written materials, grantee convenings, and other gatherings.
  • Review legal documents, monitor grantee progress reports, review financial and narrative reports and work with operations team to ensure timely payments.
  • Provide responsive and thoughtful advising to grantees; be proactive in anticipating needs, and provide accurate, timely resolution of issues when they arise and build strong partnerships.
  • Identify potential new partnerships and opportunities including identifying prospective grantees and funding opportunities. 

Collaboration Across Foundation Portfolio Areas

  • Collaborate with Foundation colleagues to implement, refine, and expand the Foundation’s impact over time.
  • Help shape strategy implementation plans aligned with the assigned portfolio.
  • Help support other projects and assignments as requested by the team, Foundation leadership, and/or board members.

Who We are Looking For
Qualifications required for a successful candidate:

  • At least 5 years of work in a health-related or nonprofit setting
  • Excellent written communication skills with experience in producing both brief and longer form written products in a timely fashion
  • Outstanding verbal communication skills
  • A bachelor’s degree
